Last night, we told you about the unlicensed weapon fired in Belize City on Sunday night on Faber's Road Extension. A police patrol team was in the area, and they immediately detained a man they believed was the culprit handling that gun. That man has gone to the Magistrate's Court to plead guilty to firearms charges.
He's 24-year-old Nigel Nicole Freeman Jr., a resident of Fabers Road in Belize City. Police say that at around 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, they heard the sound of gunshots being fired in the Bingo King area, so they immediately went to investigate. That's when they encountered Freeman, and they immediately detained him. They then searched the area and found an expended nine-millimeter shell, and a short distance away, they came upon a nine-millimeter pistol.
The cops charged him with keeping an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition.
He was arraigned today before Magistrate Baja Shoman, and he wasted no time and pleaded guilty to both offenses. He admitted to the court that he tried to dispose of the weapon before the cops caught him with it.
After deliberation, the Magistrate sentenced Freeman to spend two years in prison for the 11 live rounds of ammunition and two and a half years for the firearm. Both sentences are to run concurrently, meaning that Freeman will spend two and a half years in jail.
