Tonight a man accused of murder is free after the judge found him not guilty.
Leon Perez was charged for fatally stabbing Coast Guardsman 28-year-old Elston Morter back in September 2021. Perez maintained his innocence throughout the trial and one of the witnesses, who was his neighbor, testified that he saw someone else take a knife out of Perez's pocket and stab Morter from behind.
In a 39 page ruling, Justice Candace Nanton found Perez not guilty. She explained that the crown's evidence was not satisfactory to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The incident occurred on Independence Day three years ago after Morter and Perez got into an argument near their homes in Hattieville. Morter left behind twin boys.
