On Tuesday we took you to the village of Duck Run 3 in Cayo near Spanish Lookout where the chairman and the area rep are planning to put a cemetery. The only problem is that there are people living on the land who say they've been there for well over a decade. They've built their farms and their houses and they refuse to leave.
Today we spoke via phone with the chairman of the village who says that those people don't have any papers for the land, so they have no rights to it.
Victor Perez, Chairman, Duck Run 3
"No one was living there, they took that land, and then one day they brought people to live there and put their houses. A villager has her house at the corner of the cemetery and now she has moved completely to where the whole cemetery would be. That is not justified because she has no rights to that land, she has no rights from the government. I am the one who was given the papers."
"She knew that a cemetery was going to be built there so why would she put her house there, she herself doesn't have papers to build and yet she did."
We'll keep following developments there.
