He was sent to jail for a heinous murder in 2003 and after more than 2 decades behind bars, Louis Gillett was today told he can only apply for parole after he has served 29 years and 2 months in prison.

In March of 2003, Gillett killed store owner Alvin Godfrey inside his grocery store on 6th Street in the King's Park Area. At the time, the shocking crime stunned the community since Godfrey's store was a King's Park institution.

Today - to bring his life sentence in line with the new sentencing guidelines - Justice Nigel Pilgrim imposed a life sentence upon Gillett and ordered him to serve 29 years and 2 months in jail.

In making his assessment, Justice Pilgrim also took into consideration the Victim Impact Statement in which Godfrey's son, Gregory said, "The Impact of the violent act committed against our father Alvin Godfrey over two decades ago continues to affect and haunt our family to this day. The emotional wounds inflicted by the shooting have never fully healed leaving lasting scar that has shaped our lives in profound ways."

Justice Pilgrim noted that the convict - in his 20 years behind bars - has only participated in one rehabilitation program which will make it difficult for him if and when he is to be considered parole.
