28 year old Sebastian Pop was abducted from the Belizean village of Dolores by a Guatemalan mob of vigilantes in February of 2024. Since then he has been in a Guatemalan prison - reportedly accused of murder. And - according to his family - no Belizean authority has tried to do anything for him. They tell us they've gone to police, Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs and say that all they've gotten is the run around - with the police even suggesting that he is not a Belizean - when, for the avoidance of doubt - we can confirm he is a born Belizean.
Today, Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca told us he did not know about Pop's case. In a text message, he said, quote, "It was brought to my attention yesterday no doubt as a result of your inquiries and I have asked the CEO and Ambassador Alpuche to provide me with a full brief on the case. That work is ongoing. I had no knowledge of the matter before yesterday. We will certainly now treat it with the urgency it requires and deserves."
