There was a shocking shooting around mile three and a half on the Phillip Goldson Highway two hours ago. Dozens of shots were fired at a moving vehicle - but, miraculously, there were no fatalities and no life threatening injuries are reported at this time.
Our team was on the scene and here's what we have gathered:
As many as 50 gunshots from what experts say sounds like two weapons - one automatic - one semiautomatic were fired at this Chevy Equinox at mile 3.5 on the Phillip Goldson Highway around 4:00 pm today. The Equinox came to a stop in front of Maheia's Construction - but it probably first came under fire somewhere north of the Reimer's roundabout at around mile 3.
Eyewitnesses tell us the Equinox was northbound when another northbound midsize SUV-pulled up and two gunmen came out and sprayed it with gunfire.
The passengers in the Equinox - including two off duty BDF soldiers - dashed for cover in the Maheia's yard, while the shooters got back in the vehicle, stowed their guns and raced away towards the Haulover bridge.
Oncoming southbound traffic scattered, slamming their vehicles into reverse - as they saw the shocking shooting unfold right in front of them.
Many expended shell casings could be seen on the highway as police processed the crime scene.
Reports say that the target may have been a gang leader.
So far we know that two of the injured are Glenford Reed age: 36, a Belizean BDF soldier who received a wound to his right leg, and Joshua Augustine age: 28, a Belizean BDF soldier who received a graze on his stomach.
A statement just a few minutes ago from the BDF says those soldiers are no longer in the BDF.
Private Glenford Reid has been Absent Without Leave (AWOL) for approximately eight years prior to the incident.
Private Joshua Augustine - who reportedly owned the vehicle - is awaiting formal approval from the Security Services Commission for discharge and removal from active strength. "His administrative separation process was already underway prior to this event." So far police have not confirmed how many people were shot- but again we can say that despite the number of rounds fired, none of them were life threatening.
And while there is speculation that the Chevy Equinox looks a lot like the one they abducted Joseph Budna in - our review of the Budna abduction video suggests that the vehicle he was pushed into had a different lighting arrangement on the front end.
