The addition of this base couldn't come at a better time, given the spike in crime on Ambergris Caye, like the triple murder that happened just three weeks ago. The Area representative for Belize rural south says it is concerning and they are keeping a close eye on the back areas where active gang warfare is occurring.
Andre Perez, Area Representative, Belize Rural South
"You know it is always a concern when we have these types of crimes and in particular this is an extraordinary one with three people. Yes there is always the concern but look, we are not trying to shun away from it but the investigation is showing that this is something that is really gang warfare and certainly it is not permeating into the central area or the tourism is it is usually those back areas it is happening but I want to thank the police for that fast response and the arrests that they have made. It just shows that the police department are on top of things and that we are moving forward especially this morning I was on the morning show speaking about security so it is not only about the police doing their job in terms of the drug trafficking that is occurring across this whole country, especially the coast. Coming into this easter the police will in check here in Caye Caulker and San Pedro as well with other different things that happen, we have to be careful."
