Next month, NICH is going from artistry to advocacy with the presentation of a powerful one woman play named "Who Will Sing for Lena?" The star is Makeda Solomon, a celebrated Jamaican actress. Cultural Ambassador for NICH Andy Palacio explained why this performance matters in Belize.
Andy Palacio,
"This play is highly significant for women in particular in that it really depicts the atrocities of gender based violence. The story is that Lena Baker in the 1940s killed a white man in self defense, he was keeping her as a sex slave when he in fact hired her as a domestic worker and her trial only lasted one day and she was convicted by a jury of nine white men, all white, all male and 60 years after her execution the state of Georgia offered her a posthumous pardon for that miscarriage of justice."
The play will show at the Bliss Center on June first and second.
