Last night we told you about the tension in City Hall over the paving of Banak Street. It's only 1,100 feet long and according to our reports, only a $60,000 but the flare-up over Banak has its root in other internal differences within the council. Those differences became apparent on Monday night when eight councilors met without Mayor Zenaida Moya and deputy Wayne Usher.
At that meeting they resolved to direct the Mayor to terminate Pamela Smith. Pamela Smith is the acting financial controller of the City Council and the one famously dubbed "Ms. Pam" by councilor Mark King when he objected to her salary of over $5,000 a month. Mayor Moya later refuted that saying that Pamela Smith is working on a voluntary basis. It seems though, that is not the considered opinion of the rest of the council, who've now resolved to have her fired.
From the perspective of those 8 councilors, it seems the only question now is who will issue the letter of termination: acting Mayor Wayne Usher or Mayor Moya, when she returns from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
At their monthly meeting, the councilors also discussed the Mayor's plan to transfer 33 council employees, plus equipment to SEL, Sanitation Enterprises Limited. Apparently, the council was not informed of this decision, and is not satisfied that it is a prudent decision.
But all that's not the end of the discord at city hall, there's a clear power divide between Moya and Usher on one hand and a group of at least 6 councilors on the other. And we are informed the UDP central executive has set a meeting for next week to iron those differences out.
