And we close tonight on a historical note. In a follow up to our story last night on the distinctly odd gazebo at the foot of the bridge – we stand corrected, it’s not that out of place, in fact it is a throwback.
As this picture shows, the design was appropriated from Belize’s own history – this is a photo from the 1940’s when there was an identical structural at the very same bridgefoot. Of course, back then, the quaint design fit fight in because there was more pedestrian and bike traffic in the old capital - whereas nowadays, it’s bumper to bumper traffic snarls.
But still, the gazebo sponsored by Benny’s brings some historical currency and elegance to the grim traffic gridlock.
