A month ago, we heard from two residents: one from Dangriga and the other from Belmopan, who expressed frustration that the garbage dumps near their communities burn through the day and night.

They were especially aggrieved by the two unused garbage transfer stations located near the piles of improperly disposed solid waste.

These unused stations outside of Belmopan and Dangriga are just two of six that have been completed countrywide - but stand dormant. The problem is that the cost to run these facilities is in the millions. The Ministry of Natural Resources, which oversees SWAMA, has not been able to to find money to activate the transfer stations.

Last week, we asked Minister Cordel Hyde about the tentative timeline to bring these facilities online:

As you heard, the plan is for the Dangriga and Belmopan stations to be brought online very soon. The ministry has already accepted bids for management tendering contracts. As soon as the managers are identified for those two transfer stations, the government will move to activate them. We'll wait and see.
