By definition they're supposed to be the Guardians of the coast, but today a viewer called on 7News to investigate a video showing a disturbing oil leak right on the Coast Guard compound. According to this concerned resident, it was burnt oil that the BCG was storing, and that the barrel it was kept in was leeching out into the nearby wetlands and mangrove area.
When we asked Coast Guard commander Admiral Elton Bennett about it, he explained that he wasn't aware of the problem but immediately went to check on it. He confirmed that it was indeed their compound and said that they were acting quickly to clean it up. Bennett added as well that he wasn't sure how long it had been leaking, but admitted that they should not have been storing oil like that for extended periods of time. He told us that they will be disposing of the oil in a safer manner.
