And the other pressing immigration issue in Belize is Haitians. As turmoil dominates their country, they are fleeing anyway they can. And many have been using their status as CARICOM nationals to visit Belize without a visa - where they get a six month stay.
But, it's been far from welcoming. Immigration authorities suspect they are only using Belize as a conduit to go north to the US, and authorities stalk them while they are here. And, now, a group of 12 Haitains who were found in northern Belize have had their passports confiscated by the immigration department. We are told that the Haitians have been told they will get it back when they leave the country.
That's highly suspect behavior, and today the Compol said Belize must be cognizant of its treaty obligations to CARICOM nationals:
