Last week, we told you about the formation of the tropical weather system which quickly strengthened into Hurricane Ida.

Fortunately, Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula dodged that bullet, but after Ida went into the Gulf of Mexico, it quickly strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds just short of 157 miles per hour. It made landfall yesterday, in the US State of Louisiana, and it brought major devastation. Hurricane-force winds wrecked building roofs, knocked down trees, damaged power lines, and storm surges forced Americans to take refuge on their rooftops, where they had to be rescued. One person has been confirmed dead as a result of the passage of this storm.

Almost a million people within some parts of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans are without power tonight, and it could take several days or weeks for the damage to be repaired and services to be returned.

Last year, the state of Louisana was hit by Hurricane Laura, and 16 years ago, that state was devastated by the deadly Hurricane Katrina.
