Before the break we told you about the difficulties with Haitians seeking safe passage through Belize in suspected human smuggling operations. Another Caribbean country and neighbor to Haiti is experiencing its own serious migratory pressures. Cubans - especially young ones - are trying to flee the island nation as a consequence of severe economic conditions following the COVID pandemic, and, of course, as a consequence of 61 years of the US trade embargo.
And, now for the first time, a Cuban President will visit Belize. Miguel Diaz-Canel will make an official visit to Belize on Sunday, February 12, 2023. The programme includes a Special Sitting of the National Assembly, a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, as well as the signing of two agreements.
We'll have updates on the agenda for this historic first as the day draws nearer. Belize and Cuba have enjoyed diplomatic relations for 28 years.
