She's had a string of bad luck, and tonight a Belize City resident is crying out for help. Martha Savery is now facing her second terminal domestic misfortune. Last time bad luck caught up with this mother of four, and this time, it's overtaken her. Alfonso Noble found out more.
Alfonso Noble Reporting,
This morning port employee Martha Savery was trying to salvage whatever her household items that she could after a fire around 4 on Saturday morning left her home destroyed and her life turned upside down.
She says it all started on Saturday when she was getting ready to go to work.
Martha Savery,
"I got up Saturday pressing my uniform to get ready to go to work. Then my mind told me to look at the corridor and I peeked and when I looked, I saw black smoke and I woke up my two children who were in here with me at the same time. I shouted to them, 'fire, fire,' and I opened the door hurry and I went upstairs to call my sister and tell them a fire around and for them get up and they heard me and everybody tried to get out."
The fire started in this room, destroying everything that was inside. Today all that was left was this pile of charred rubble. It was heaped next to this Rodeo which was also destroyed because it was parked next to the room.
Martha Savery,
"From the first room I saw the smoke."
Alfonso Noble,
Anything in there that could have started a fire?
Martha Savery,
"No, that room, nobody was using it at that time."
And now the entire house is uninhabitable and Savery says she's been plagued by misfortune.
Martha Savery,
I used to live in the St. Martin's Deporess area, my house fell down flat to the ground and I didn't get any assistance so my sister let me stay h3ere for a while and I do so for over three years. I cannot live here; there is no electricity and nothing at this time and you can see how the place is all smoky, the wall and everything. You still can smell and everything so its unlivable to be living here. I wish if I could get some assistance to build a house because my land is still empty 'back a Martins.'"
For now however this smoked and destroyed house is where Savery and her four children are living and they will have to make do because they have nowhere else to go.
Savery says she gave the Housing Department a down payment of $400 three years ago and hasn't heard anything since then. Anyone wanting to help can call her at phone number is 207-0031 or 623-2989.
