The Belize City Traffic Department is currently updating its records and, if you aren't prepared, that could mean a headache for you the next time you go to renew your driver's license. If you want to renew your license, get a new one or even transfer vehicles you must bring in proof of identification, and a utility bill to show that you live where you claim to live. Bad news for those who live at a residence where the bills are in someone else's name.
Councilor in charge of the Traffic Department Dean Samuels tells us that exceptions are made for those who have to go through extraordinary measures to obtain a utility bill. But the exceptions are rare and in most cases, applicants who don't have a bill in their names must bring in a signed declaration from the person they are living with to certify proof of address.
To many it is an added inconvenience, but Samuels says it is in an effort to verify current addresses of those conducting transactions at the department and a way to better serve arrest warrants on delinquent drivers.
