They are children with disabilities but tomorrow they'll show you their abilities and then some. The occasion is the Special Olympics which will be held at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. The games will cap off Disability Awareness Week. This is only the fourth Special Olympics in 15 years in Belize which is reason for celebration. Today that meant hitting the streets for an awareness-raising parade to promote tomorrow's Olympics. National Director of the Special Olympics in Belize Akintade Atkens he told us more.
Akintade Atkens, Dir., Special Olympics Belize
"We will having althelthes from all over the country participating in volleyballs and of course track and field and of course there will be many side attractions. We will have a colorful parade by Stella Maris Band and of course St. Luke's Band and of course we will have DJs from NICH and the Pantempers Steel Band on display. It is going to be all sport but there is going to be a lot of fun activities for families and of course for children who will be coming to the games. You will see them doing amazing things tomorrow, things that actually you wouldn't expect them to do. You will see them doing it tomorrow.
One of the major reason why people should come out is actually to help give a kind of support to the Special Education Unit, to Special Olympics, and of course the athletes who of course to an extent have some kind of disability. So actually it encourages them so they can do more. We can see that these games go a long way in helping them cope."
The Special Olympics begins at 8:30 am, and entrance is free. The next global Special Olympics will be in Shanghai China in October of 2007.
