As we said, it does not compel the government to do anything, but the CJ said he does expect that a referendum will be held. Well, it seems his expectations of the executive will not be fulfilled. Late this evening, the Prime Minister went on record to say that while he respects the CJ’s opinion he sees no value in holding a pointless, purposeless, fruitless referendum. He referred specifically to holding a referendum at the end of the legislative process – which would serve no purpose – because the legislation would have already been approved.
