And in a story that may or may not be related to crime trends in Belize, a man was executed in the center of Chetumal today - at a convenience store right in front of the popular Fiesta Inn. The broad daylight execution reportedly caused panic and trauma in the area - and was certainly an unusually violent event for Chetumal.
Now, contrary to reports, he is not a Belizean, per se. His name is Juan Ulises Galvan Carmona, known as "El Buda." Reports in the media over there say he recently moved to Chetumal and is a Sinaloa Cartel operator - who may have links to drug movements in Belize.
But, what's more interesting is that media colleagues in Chetumal report that Mexican authorities are saying Carmona had 3 passports: Belizean, Mexican and Guatemalan. We will certainly follow up on this.
