Right now, the Government of Belize and UNICEF are collaborating on Disaster Risk Reduction plan for Belize's children.
According to the UN, whenever there are natural disasters, such as hurricanes and other extreme weather occurrences, vulnerable populations, such as women and children, are the most significantly impacted. Children represent half of the populations which are displaced by complex emergencies, and about 70% of all deaths that occur in these disasters are children.
UNICEF and the Government want to ensure that Belize's children don't follow those global statistics, and so, they've started consultation on a disaster risk reduction plan for the youngest members of our population.
They invited 40 children, ages 10 to 17, from each of the 6 districts to participate in the consultation phase of the plan, which happened today, and here's what the UNICEF's Early Childhood Education and Development Officer had to about the final draft of the plan will be developed:
