We also asked Captain Sanchez about the history of Eboe Town here on the Southside more or less between South Street and Racecourse Street. The area was occupied by enslaved Africans, mainly those from the Igbo tribe in the 18th to 19th centuries.

He said it was once known as a community filled with logwood cutters.

Capt. Nicolas Sanchez, Tour Guide Pioneer & Historian

"Ebo Town was from South street to the canal to the East Canal, and then Albert Street down to Racecourse street, in that area there. That is where the slaves or the ex -slaves after they lived in that area and when they like now, the 15 of December, the camps are broken and everybody comes to town to celebrate and so on, the women and kids would be here, but the men would go and work in the forest in the Mahogany forest."

Eboe Town was mostly destroyed by a fire in the earl 1800's.
