A 19-year-old student of Saint John's Junior College changed his social status from student to inmate today when he appeared in Magistrate's Court. The young man, 19-year-old Glenroy Barrow along with his friend a 17 year old appeared before Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord charged with 2 counts of robbery.
At 11:45 yesterday morning Jamil Harmouch and Sylvan Garbutt were walking through an alley that connects Lizarraga Avenue and Princess Margaret Drive when they were robbed by the pair. They stole Harmouch's cell phone, and snatched $15 from Garbutt while also attempting unsuccessfully to steal his cell phone.
Barrow and Sanchez pleaded guilty to stealing the money while Barrow pleaded guilty to taking the cell phone. Barrow told the court that it was a prank and he and Sanchez were set up by another person to do it.
Because it was their first offence Lord decided not to give them a custodial sentence; instead he fined Barrow $6,000 with a payment of $1,000 to be made immediately. Sanchez was fined $3,000 with $1,000 to be paid forthwith. Both young men were unable to pay the fine and were remanded to the Hattieville Prison. The minimum sentence for robbery is 5 years on summary conviction and it can extend to 10 years.
