While the shortage of neurosurgeons at the KHMH has made all the headlines, that's neither here nor there for accident victim Andy Prior. He doesn't need a neurosurgeon, he just needs regular surgery and two days ago, he told us that he's mad as hell because he can't get it.
Andy Prior,
"They told me they would give me a surgery and then they just left me on the bed. They gave me an appointment but then apparently the doctors went to party at Show Grounds. They didn't really worry about nobody, they went to party more than anything else. Tuesday morning they came back, they came back with a lot of fancy speech but they still didn't do anything because they just came to peep and they went about their business again and they came back in the evening, they came back in the morning and that's all they did."
Alfonso Noble,
So you are saying you aren't getting the attention you need.
Andy Prior,
"No kind of attention. They made us pay an ambulance to go to Universal and when we reached there the man looked at me and said he couldn't do it, all kind of simple excuse. If we were begging it would be different but this country is really in a sad state with those way-out Cuban doctors. Some of them don't even have any experience to work, the way I see it. They just bore you up all about the place like crazy people; all of my hand right here, my foot, and that's all they did. They didn't really give me any result but my boss is looking to ship me out to Merida because there has been no improvement from Friday to now and I am here with pain."
Alfonso Noble,
So you are not satisfied with the treatment you are getting here?
Andy Prior,
"I am unsatisfied. The doctors are giving you fancy speech and no result. According to them the two main arteries are hooked up but you are looking at Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night, and we are way at Wednesday and it still hasn't gotten hooked up back yet. My foot can't move if you watch at my foot, it can't move. Only one of my foot can move. My back feels messed up, my chest feels messed up, and it really isn't cutting it dig. We really need somebody to look after poor people in this country because they say these places are for the public but shucks, as far as I see it, it isn't so at all."
Alfonso Noble,
So if you can't afford to go elsewhere...
Andy Prior,
"They will leave you to die."
Up to yesterday evening, 24 hours after we did the interview, he still had not gotten that surgery. Prior says he is looking to for medical attention elsewhere but is limited by finances.
