World Red Cross day is Monday and it will mark the beginning of Red Cross week in Belize. The week will be observed under the theme: "universal assistance through volunteering." This morning the Red Cross Society announced their schedule of activities. Karen Diaz is the society's president.

Karen Diaz, President - Red Cross Society
"It is Red Cross Week, May 8th is World Red Cross Day and we'll be having several activities during the week across the country. On Monday we have an open day in Battlefield Park, downtown Belize City, all are invited to come. We will be trying to sell our products, teaching what we do, encourage people to sign up as volunteers or what we call supporting members; you might not have your time to volunteer but maybe you have a few dollars so you can volunteer by becoming a supporting member. In Orange Walk they will be having what they call a march across town. Basically we will be celebrating the work that we do. We will be having church services across the nation. Corozal is having a parade so there is quite a number of activities in each one of our district.

It is an immense personal satisfaction that you get from expecting nothing in return, that what you give is just for the joy of living alone. If it is time, if it is money, if it is materials - whatever it is that you are able to do, I encourage people to come and improve the lives of vulnerable people everywhere through sharing their time and energies."

There are about 12 hundred volunteers and about 330 registered members.
