Tonight there is a new student boss at the University of Belize. In an election held yesterday, Queen of the Bay Carrie Wong K dethroned Moses Sulph from his seat as student government president. There were only 284 votes of which 172 went to Wong K and 108 went to Sulph. 4 ballots were spoilt.

We said "only 284 votes" because there are close to one thousand students who were eligible to vote. The only good news is that turnout actually increased this year. But the real story is that the two-year reign of the outspoken Moses Sulph is over. He became a national figure during the uprisings of 2005.

Carrie Wong K is the reigning Queen of the Bay but she also previously served as a secretary of UB's student government. She had the open endorsement of UDP city councilor Phillip Willoughby, who openly challenged Sulph, his former running mate.
